Paharganj is the "backpackers" haven on the edge of Old Delhi. Budget hotels with rooftop terraces, inexpensive eateries with fresh authentic Indian food, and wholesale markets line the main bazaar and maze of alleys. I have often wondered if I had landed in Paharganj for my first Indian experience, how I would have coped. It is noisy, dirty and crowded. The shop owners are persistent and will follow you down the street. It can be difficult and annoying, and you can easily be overcharged and misled if you do not know prices. But now it is one of my favorite places to find inexpensive treasures and eat tasty momos.
Caution: I have been told that the "tourist agencies" are not all legit.

Camel leather stool tops. |
Shop owners from the U.S. and Europe buy bundles of these items to take back to their stores. Hmmm...maybe I can have a little retirement business!

Just a cow... |
Night time in Paharganj is a whole different experience. This is when every shop and stall is open and all the locals come to shop. I don't know if I will ever get used to seeing random cows everywhere.
